August 7th of this year. My former boss posts this:
Today, she posts this:
Obviously, they did zero research before dumping money into a new model like the Patriot.
Oh, and they looked into getting rid of it and it’s depreciated $7,000 in four months. And they are now upside down on their loan. Shocking.
I hate to see someone in a situation like that, but damn. Look stuff up before you go and buy a new car.

Is that really a 2016 Patriot? My god, it looks like it was designed back in 2000.

Yep. The Patriot and Compass have been allowed to languish on the vine for way, way too long. And they still sell well! Which proves...price beats anything else. You can get these dirt cheap with incentives and such. And apparently, you get what you pay for.

A friend of mine had one in high school (a 2010 I believe) and it was a total shit bucket. It was just so awful to drive and even worse to be in.

My boss, who’s 8 months pregnant, wanted to get something that can baby better than a Civic coupe. She was looking at a Compass. I told her not to get a Compass, that they were crap and a recent CR-V or even a 4-door Civic would be much better. She got a Compass.

This is why you should do at least a tiny bit of research before buying a car even if you don’t care about them. I don’t care about dishwashers, but I’d at least take a look at some reviews before buying one.

The Patriot has the dubious honor of being the most unpleasant vehicle I have ever driven.
And this is coming from a guy who daily drove a Suzuki Sidekick for years. That was made out of the good halves of two Suzuki Sidekicks which were cut apart and welded together. With over 200,000 miles on it. And a stripped interior with no sound insulation.

There was a woman I saw on a local swap page who made several posts asking for a Vauxhall Zafira for a few days. Her posts then stopped for a day and the next, she was selling her newly-acquired Zafira because she discovered she couldn’t afford the insurance...

Lol. We have a Royal Mail truck driver who comes into our shop early in the morning called Willie. He’s a nice guy and loves BMWs. He currently has a BMW M5 with Competition Pack with all the carbon fibre bits he could tick.
Two cars before that he bought a brand new BMW 3 Series, again with all the add ons and carbon fibre for £56,000. After one week he was complaining. I said what’s wrong with it, he says it’s too small (now Willie is only 5'5" tall). I reply, didn’t you order it as a new build after test driving it? He says yes he did a 24hr test drive. I reply. well didn’t that one seem small at the time. He said it didn’t. He swapped it for a BMW X6 for £78,000 and taking a £14,000 loss on the 3 Series after seven months of ownership.
More money than sense.

You’re not far off, it’s been on sale since 2006, which means the final design was probably signed off sometime in 2004.

Last winter my wife’s friend sent me a list of small SUVs she was interested in. The Patriot was on the list. I told her to buy any of the others, “but if you tell me you’re on your way to go buy a Patriot, I will fucking tackle you.” Of course, she bought a Patriot, which she is now trying to lemon-law.

Oh, he’s incredibly frugal with his money. I remember when we put up the price of a family size apple pie 3pence, he brought it to me and said, “hey Sven, this pie has gone up three pence I can’t be affording these price rises”. I replied, “Willie, I didn’t put the price of the pie, head office makes the changes and it had been that price for quite a while”.
Another time we stopped doing 250g size of minced beef and only did 400g, 650g and 900g size. Again he came to me and said, “Hey why did you stop doing the 250g size, I’ll not eat 400g”, I said “you could always freeze some for another time”, he said “no I can’t do that Sven because it would take up space in the freezer and I’d have to thaw it out again”.
I was told he’d bought a new three piece suite just before his wife had a hysterectomy, after the op she found it more comfortable to sit on the kitchen chairs which were higher up rather than the living room chairs and Willie sits on a different seat each time to get equal wear out of the suite.
As you can guess, he’s quite a character. In all the time he had the X6, he washed it with just the work pressure washer because of his height the roof never ever got cleaned because he couldn’t reach it.

- Out of date cars
- Shit cars

These attract the other side of oblivious drivers who don’t gravitate to Asian-make CUVs, Camrollas, and prestige CUV/SUVs.

My 82 year old parents recently purchased a new vehicle, and I was very afraid that my dad would do what he typically does, and cheap out and buy a 1-2 year old Patriot/Compass. Luckily, my mom put her foot down and said it’s either a Mazda CX-5 or a Honda CR-V. They went with the Honda as it was easier to get into/out of, which is important when you hit that age. It is really a very nice car, and I can see why Honda sells a ton of them.

I’m all for looking into the kind of cars and the particular car you buy before making the purchase. But maybe I’m missing something here - how was she supposed to know about the vibrations after 2500 miles? Do all Patriots do this?

It’s a very common issue with that motor and the Patriot and Compass have been at the bottom of the barrel for reliability for a long time. Much like all other FCA products.

Well then, I didn’t know that.
I’d never been interested in Jeeps (they’re cool looking and all, but no) or FCA products in general so I never bothered looking into this. They cars felts very tacky when I rode in them.
But now that I have a reason to dislike them, I feel that my hate was valid lol

Thing is, a lot of FCA cars get good reviews from the automotive press because they appear to be decent cars when brand new. Someone that does some“research” by reading a few car magazines probably won’t realize how terrible their cars are.
A lot of “research” people do is just asking the opinion of people they know. “My sister-in-law told me her 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the best car she’s ever owned, so of course I did not hesitate to buy a 2016 Jeep Patriot”

That person deserves to drive a Patriot if they lack the brain cells required to prevent them from buying literally one of the worst vehicles on the market.
